Finding Cheap Airfare to Costa Rica

Discount Airfare and Flights to Costa Rica | Tico Travel

Traveling to Costa Rica is an adventure that many people dream of, but finding the right airfare can be a challenge. With so many airlines and travel websites to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start. However, with a little bit of research and patience, you can find the best airfare to suit your budget and travel plans.

First, it’s important to be flexible with your travel dates. The cost of flights to Costa Rica can vary greatly depending on the time of year and day of the week, so being flexible with your travel dates can save you a significant amount of money.

For example, flights during peak tourist season (December to April) tend to be more expensive than flights during the low season (May to November). Flights on weekdays are also often cheaper than flights on weekends.

Another way to save money on flights to Costa Rica is to book in advance. Booking your flight several months in advance can help you secure a better deal, as airlines typically increase their prices closer to the departure date. It’s also a good idea to sign up for email alerts from airlines and travel websites, so you can stay informed about sales and special offers.

When searching for airfare to Costa Rica, it’s also important to compare prices from multiple airlines and travel websites. Major airlines like American Airlines, Delta, and United operate direct flights to Costa Rica from several cities in the United States, but there are also many budget airlines that offer flights to Costa Rica as well. Some popular travel websites, such as Expedia, Orbitz, and Kayak, allow you to compare prices from multiple airlines and book your flight in one place.

Another option to consider is flying into a nearby country and then taking a connecting flight to Costa Rica. For example, you may be able to find a cheaper flight to Panama City or San Jose, Costa Rica, and then take a connecting flight to your final destination in Costa Rica. This can be a good option for travelers on a tight budget, but it’s important to factor in the cost of the connecting flight and any additional time it may add to your travel itinerary.

When choosing your flight to Costa Rica, it’s also important to consider your travel preferences. For example, if you prefer a direct flight, you may be willing to pay a little more for the convenience. On the other hand, if you are on a tight budget, you may be willing to take a connecting flight to save money. Additionally, some airlines offer additional amenities, such as in-flight entertainment, meals, and baggage allowances, so it’s important to consider what is important to you and factor it into your decision-making process.

Deciding Which Airport to Fly Into

If you are trying to decide whether you should fly into the Liberia Airport or the airport in San Jose, I usually give people this general suggestion. If you are going to go the beaches in the Guanacaste area which would include towns such as Tamarindo, Flamingo or even as far South as Nosara (check out my article on this great surf town)  I would suggest flying into Liberia.

If you are going to pretty much anyplace else, I would fly into San Jose. This would include going to Arenal, the Caribbean coast and the towns of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo as well as the popular Central Pacific towns of Jaco Beach and Quepos/ Manuel Antonio.

The only other point I would make about this is if you are planning on taking a domestic flight with a carrier such as Sansa (you can see where the domestic flights can take you on their website ) then you will probably want to fly into San Jose.

Tips about Airfare to Costa Rica

Know what a cheap price is

You need to be able to recognize a good price, so that you can buy the ticket whenever you see that great airfare rate. If you don’t know that $150 is a good price from say Miami to San Jose, then you’ll never know if the price you see is a worth it or not, and you’ll just be buying without really knowing.. Here are some other ideas to help you find that great rate:

Be flexible with your travel dates

Tickets are usually more expensive during peak travel times and during peak travel seasons. If you can adjust your travel plans to take advantage of “off” times, days, and seasons, or search over a period of time rather than for specific days and times, you’re far more likely to find the best price you can get.

Set price alerts

These are amazing for those who are flexible. They tell you when the price of a flight has gone down allowing you to take full advantage of low fares. Pick either of the Costa Rica International Airports of Liberia (LIR) or San Jose (SJO) and set up an alert – you might get some amazing deals.

Fly Budget Airlines

If you can travel light and don’t really need the amenities that these “full service” airlines offer you can save some big money. Spirit to San Jose sometimes has some really good rates, again, if you travel light

Booking your flights to Costa Rica on certain days

Trying getting flight on Tuesdays, and Thursdays and look at red-eye (or very late flights) which are two quick ways to save money

Avoid school vacation, holidays and special events

If you’re not traveling with children then I suggest flying outside of the school vacation breaks. You will save bucket tons of money. The same hold true for travel during the holiday seasons and special events like independence day etc.
